Our History

A charter that was granted in the 13th century first gave the town of Welshpool the right to hold a weekly market on a Monday and in 1863 the Smithfield Livestock Market was established. The market spent well over a century at its old home on Mill Lane in the centre of the town before moving to its new site on the outskirts of the town.

Redevelopment

Redevelopment began in 2008, on a 16-acre site on the outskirts of the town. In November 2009, the new multi-million-pound Livestock Marketing Centre now being home to Welshpool Livestock Sales was completed and opened. Transforming the future of trading, the livestock building extends to 3.25 acres and can hold in excess of 1,200 cattle and 15,000 sheep.

Auctioneering

Long established as the main auction outlet for livestock in Mid Wales and the Borders, and still being reputed the largest prime lamb market in Western Europe. Welshpool Livestock Sales has a dedicated team that deals with the sales and purchases of both pedigree and commercial livestock on behalf of its very extensive client base.

Livestock

The WLS team conduct weekly Monday sales of prime lambs, prime cattle, cull ewes and cull cows, as well as seasonal store sheep sales including store lambs, couples and breeding ewes. With fortnightly sales of cows and calves and store cattle the market attracts buyers from all over the country, annually selling in excess of 500,000 sheep and 10,000 cattle.

Machinery

The team holds several large collective machinery sales based on the Welshpool Livestock site, ideally situated for both vendors and purchasers. It offers customers an excellent, modern sales facility for items from chainsaws to tractors, Including the provision of online bidding platforms to maximise saleability for larger items.

Facilities

The WLS conference and meeting centre provides facilities that have the ability to cater for 1 to 150 delegates to suit a range of requirements. Whether you are looking to host a corporate event, business meeting or conference, we have flexible facilities to suit all occasions with complimentary Wi-Fi, large scale onsite parking and disabled access.
